Michael Vick: "I wish I could have a dog right now more than anything in the world."

A bonus Wednesday post. I happened upon this story and thought it was worthy of discussion. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Michael Vick spoke to a group of children at a Boys and Girls club engagement in Newark, New Jersey on Tuesday. Vick stated "I wish I could have a dog right now more than anything in the world." He went on to admit that most of the charges he was found guilty of were correct, but denied any involvement in the  electrocution of dogs.

An interesting side note: According to NBC, Vick had an opportunity to meet ten of his former dogs rehabilitated by BAD RAP, but declined the offer.

My thoughts? WTF!!!!!!!!!! Well, dumb ass, if you hadn't slammed some of the to the ground and killed them that way (cause you say you didn't electrocute them...) then maybe you'd have one.

Did he say what he'd do with a dog or that he had any remorse? I was willing to see if he could maybe be rehabilitated himself. Perhaps redemption would be possible for him. But, there is a real disconnect for him, isn't there? Just to utter those words and not realize how stupid they sound. Maybe he means he would do differently, maybe he means he would be kind. But, I'm not seeing that.

What amazes me is the thought that this man is raising children. He has kids of his own. What is he teaching them? What do they think of his actions?

Is it possible that he can make a difference in what these kids think? Maybe. Is it likely he has really learned compassion towards animals? Not likely. Could just the mere act of having to face these kids have an impact on him? Possible. I mean, it is really possible that over time he might come to really realize what he did. But, as a therapist who works with really troubled kids, some of whom have even been cruel to animals, it's possible, but not likely. And, if he were to change, these kinds of changes, if they happen at all, take a long, long time.

But, gut reaction is still WTF to that statement. And, just how dumb can this man sound?

I have no respect for him, I hope he is never allowed to own a dog again. He doesn't deserve the admiration, the loyalty, the love. Maybe, though, by talking to these kids, he will affect a change in them, so that they don't do what he did. It's the best we can hope for.

  3. ARGH!!! Somehow, I missed this latest tomfuckery. Never once has his sympathy or sorrow been expressed for the dogs that suffered. It's always me me me. The only impact he feels is the flash of green across his palm.

  4. What dog would possibly want him?

  5. Absolutely not! Why should any other dog be placed in the postition of risk? He had plenty of opportunities and blew them all!

  6. This guy is so completely and totally insincere when he speaks...sounds like a robot saying words that were programmed into him. Not one iota of emotion or honesty. He's saying what he's supposed to say but it's obvious he's not feeling the way he should be feeling....GUILTY REMORSEFUL ASHAMED STUPID. Crawl back into you hole, you sadistic jerk! Maybe a dog will come along and dump on you!

  7. Anyone who would do to dogs what he did should have been sent to prison for life. The penalties for cruelty to helpless animals are not even close to harsh enough. My heart breaks for those animals Vick viciously abused. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary has rehabilitated some of the wounded and found them new homes. But the legacy of Vick's cruelty cannot be swept under the rug. Shame on anyone who promotes him as a leader of men.

  8. We seriously doubt he wants a dog. He is just trying to get the kids to feel sorry for him. Loser!!!

  9. I'm sure his reasoning for having a dog and a dog lover's reason for having a dog are as different as night and day. No way should he even be talking to children-they will see through his insincerity.

I would love to know what environment this guy grew up in. It makes me wonder what abuse he endured as a child. In that respect I feel sorry for him but do not in any way, shape or form think that makes what he did OK. He simply needs to be OUT OF THE SPOTLIGHT altogether and given psychiatric help.

  10. I think he was wise to decline the offer to meet the rehabilitated dogs as they may have been further traumatized by being near him.

I hope that his comments about wanting a dog were in context of expressing sincere regret over his actions. But I doubt it.

I just don't know what else can be said about this whole situation. People seem to have pretty entrenched views about it.

I still object strongly to the NFL's reinstatement of him, and am no longer a pro football fan because of it. (We gave all our NFL "stuff" to a veteran's group for a yard sale.)

  12. Yes, i remember reading about Bad Rap reaching out to him to make things right with the dogs(making sure to stay within terms of his probation) and Vick declining...Seriously, hope he gets sacked every time he gets the ball forever.

  13. I am sure more than anything a dog would love to have him! To maul!! What a jerk.

  14. Don't believe it, people say anything for the press to protect their image. No person that ever loved a dog could hurt dogs the way he did or stand around and watch bait dogs suffer. I hope he never has a dog as long as he lives!

  15. All we can hope is that something positive comes from all the negative he has induced.
I'm not surprised he didn't want to see his dogs, and honestly, I can't help but wonder if that would've been detrimental to the dogs to see him again. I'm just glad he knows the dogs he treated like trash have been able to come so far and be rehabilitated.

Ummm... would have been nice to have known his location yesterday. I have a heavy foot when it comes to my gas pedal

  17. Sorry he rejected the offer to see some of his rehabbed dogs - hopefully they would have ascribed themselves to that little adage: "turnabout is fair play."

  18. We will go to the ends of the earth to find a way to excuse a dog who maims, hurts, attacks, bites, and acts vicious. It's what we do, those of us who love animals.

We will risk being further injured in the hopes of rehabilitating an animal who is vicious.

My question is, if we can do that for an animal, WHY can we NOT do the very same for a Human Being?! We must be willing to forgive and love all of Spirit's creatures, not just the ones on four legs.

Loving them is easy. Loving a Human is much more difficult work, but it teaches us to expand our ability to know, love, and spiritually grow.

  19. I can't see any benefit to the dogs by his seeing his rehabbed dogs- so I'm not sorry that he declined the offer. In fact I don't think he should be allowed within 100 feet of any domestic animals (lions, tigers, etc. maybe...)
I am hoping that his statement was simply an attempt to convince the children that if they are cruel to animals they will be denied the PRIVILEGE of owning animal, a privilege that will be missed.
Of course, he should have said treating an animal that way makes you nothing but a cruel S.O.B who does not deserve to draw breath....
Anyway, I wouldn't want him talking to my children about ANYTHING!

  20. Hmm, wait, I'm sure I have the world's smallest violin around here somewhere so I can play him a sad song ...

Vick didn't personally electrocute any of his dogs? Well, that clears everything up. NOT! As far as I am concerned, the only regret Vick has is that he was caught. Woe is him.

Shame on the Boys and Girls Club for holding Vick out to children as a role model. There are plenty of athletes who are neither felons or thugs in spite of the fact that they came up in the school of hard knocks and would have been glad to meet with the children.

  22. I think Nigel and crew need to take a dump on that idiot. i am enraged that he is even out of jail so soon. He should have 3 to 4 yrs living the life of one of his pits. Make him bait dogs and be hung and prodded with electrical sticks....
dont get me started as I cant deal with my anger in these situations. He shouldnt even be talking to kids although I know it is a requirement of his sentence. Gosh we just need to realize our dogs are just property.....great system huh? :-(

    ReplyDelete
  23. eh, no. negative. he shouldn't be let near an animal period. what's insulting - and the sad fact is that he doesn't even realize it - is that because he didn't electrocute them, he believes that doesn't make him guilty? bastard. i don't know if he's rehabilitated - i'll give him the benefit of the doubt - but i wouldn't trust him with an animal ever again.

  24. You reap what you sow, dumba**. He probably was afraid his prior dogs would do him some damage if he got with eye sight of them. The kids would do better to have the dogs come visit them.

I am conflicted at to whether or not Vick should have seen the rehabbed dogs. I think he is a chicken shit, couldn't deal. I'm sure there would have been some satisfaction for those care givers to have seen him forced to visit them - no option should have been given. The ideal sentence would have been served in a dog pound, in a cage, forcing him to live with those he victimized so happily. I believe nothing of what he says, he should never be allowed to have any dog to kick around anymore.

I think he is a chicken s--t. He should have been forced to see the rehabbed dogs, with no right of refusal. Bet the caregivers would have received some satisfaction in seeing him dragged kicking and screaming to view the remains of his carnage. The ideal sentence would have been for him to live out his life in a dog pound, in a cage surrounded by those who represent the carnage he reaped. Vick should never be allowed to have a dog to kick around.

  29. The link is to the story of one of my girls who came from a fighting group. She experienced post traumatic stress and had panic attacks. She was a love. I don't think she'd hate Vick or anyone for that matter. Nor, would she ever want to see them again.

Do you really expect any discussion from dog lovers other than WTF? Seriously. Our biggest problem is we keep giving Vicks air time. talking to children, uproars on the blog world about his statement of wanting a dog. I'm with Frankie on this. I'm pissed at the NFL and society for not ostrascizing him further. Instead we continue to talk about him when he should be ignored. All his actions positive and negative should get no attention what so ever. Dogs do this in packs. they ostrascize a naughty pack follower. Society should ignore him. He should have no chances at an esteemed life with or without a dog and I do not want to see his face in the news no matter what he says. I'm a little sick of the issue only because he keeps getting 10 more minutes of fame. fame is fame. no matter positive or negative. there will always be some frackers who believe in him (Chris Rock) and agree w/him. and his celebrity will continue. I say enough of seeing him on the news. And i promise not to write more about it. (or try to anyway).

  37. His idea of dog ownership is obviously very different to that of most normal people. I find it hard to believe he has done an about turn in his attitude to dogs.

    ReplyDelete
  38. He is not fit to have a dog, a cat, a child or to be out of prison. As far as I'm concerned, he is a life long loser. I still can't believe the NFL was so stupid as to take him back. He needs to be punished for what he did and his punishment was nothing...he's back playing in the NFL, and given a chance, he would do what he did to dogs again.

but I don't care and so he stays where he is, on the list of people going to a very hot place when they die.

  44. OMD!!!!! I saw this and can you believe he said, "I have always cared for my dogs!" BOL! He called what he did and let others do caring for his dogs. He has to talk to children groups for part of his probation. WHY or WHY my Eagles had to pick him up and give him millions is beyond me. I have had to BOYCOTT my team for a year or until they come to their senses and 'GET RID OF VICK!' My new tag line is 'Vick of the Eagles make me SICK!' Human Granny said that he should have to give at least half of his earnings to Animal Shelters all over America. What a poor excuse of a human!
I get really fired up when his name is mentioned. Poor pups!

Jerk. He should be put on a rape rack, have all his teeth pulled, thrown in a pit and then drowned.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anonymous11:54 AM

Daisydog, did I read that correctly: a "rape rack"? I really hope that is a typo because it's not funny or clever. For many people, rape is a very real issue and it's not to be thrown around lightly over someone you dislike. I agree that Vick is a horrible person who has done awful things to dogs but it is the height of insensitivity to wish rape upon him, especially on a public blog where rape survivors might stumble across it.

Please have a little sense and decency.

  47. Shame on us as a society that our criminal justice system works in such a way that this sadist is talking to children as part of his probation. He should not be anywhere near children or animals, let alone be seen as any kind of role model.
